George Balanchine's stylish ballet triptych, brilliantly evoking the sparkle of rubies, emeralds and diamonds.
As glittering as the gems that inspired it, this elegant three-act abstract ballet masterpiece is a testament to the virtuoso talents of choreographer George Balanchine. Russian-born co-founder of the New York City Ballet, Balanchine has been described as the father of American ballet. The artistry of jewellery designer Claude Arpels inspired him to create a trio of distinct movements revealing the essence of each precious stone, while also evoking three very different ballet styles. 'Emeralds' was conceived as a tribute to the French romantic school, with music by Gabriel Faure. The suitably fiery and energetic 'Rubies' taps in to the rich tradition of jazz-age Broadway musicals, with music by Stravinsky. 'Diamonds' honours the grandeur of Imperial Russia and St. Petersburg's Maryinsky Theater, choreographed brilliantly to the music of Tchaikovsky. It all adds up to a timeless masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet.
